When I turned it on for a second, last winter, I rem hearing a clunk, and then another clunk when I turned it off. Made sense to me.. So, I figured I'd just activate it again now, and roll up and down the driveway once to exercise it. BUT, when I turned it on this time, the light came on, but no clunk when it came on, or off. I went up and down the driveway anyway, and I THINK it felt like it was ON, but I didn't make any turns, because I figured that would be bad.
Does anyone have one that is silent when it locks? I think I saw a post where everyone said it's supposed to clunk on/off. Could it just be the season/temps, only clunks in winter? I have a 4x2 btw, so it's just a turn switch. I hope it's not stuck or frozen somehow already..
I have 4x2 as well. Did you lock the diff while moving when you heard the clunk? I have never heard a clunk when i activated it when stopped. however i wasnt listening really closely for a noise.

I knew to only do it when stopped. Last winter, I'm almost certain I put it in "N" first, or maybe just butted up against the snow mound in D, not moving... on that occasion.
If yours comes on perfectly silent when stopped, then mines prob ok, just got spooked when I didn't hear the clunk.
The time it clunked, was the first time I ever turned it on. It was really cold out too, morning after blizzard.
Shouldn't really here a clunk. Mines almost silent. I can only hear it when not moving. And its just the actuator making noise as it should. Maybe your definition or observation is different than mine. But Im mechanical and its nothing Id be concerned about on mine. You can engage it moving its designed for either. It looks like you have a 2011 or up truck? Read the owners manual there is some info in there...such as it will automatically disengage over 30mph then re-engage under 30.
If in doubt take it to the stealership for a check. Worth $100 for a piece of mind its ok.
go to a dirt area.... turn lock ON.. and make a sharp turn.. stop truck and check tracks.....
one track will show your tread.. other one will show a dragged tread...
mine does NOT made a noise... and mine will not let you turn it ON over 20 mph.
Haha, I know.. If I had a vacant dirt lot near by, I'd have tried that.
I'm guessing it's fine now, since everyone sais it's supposed to be silent.
As for the clunk from last winter, I had another thought.. Maybe it wasn't a clunk, but just the brake on the other wheel grunted for a split second when I turned it on..
It must be fine ..I'm just paranoid about this type of stuff. lol
Depends how its lined up when you activate it. Sometimes it may just slip in when you are stopped, sometimes you may need to let the truck roll a tad to get it in.
