Steering column adjustment

Can the mounting spacer in the cab of my '64 F-250 be eliminated to allow more room between the driver and the wheel or does it involve too much fiddling with the steering?
Thanks. john

The 64 steering column uses a solid shaft that goes directly into the gear box. If you want to shorten it then you have to do some modifications to the shaft and the column body. I just redid mine, but stupidly I kept the same length, and now it's too close to my body (my wife is worried about that). Check out my thread for what I did (or, more accurately, my mechanic did). If you add a rag joint, I suggest going the distance and adding two. I will eventually redo mine to do that, and move the steering wheel farther from my body.

Steve, I'm stumped, how does one keep it the same length, and now it's to close to your body??

What I was wondering if it's possible to do would be to rotate the steering box sightly. loosen and relocate the firewall mounting bolts as needed, and attach the column directly to the bottom of the dash. This would give a little more room. I just wondered if anyone had tried this.
