What is causing this tailgate noise ?

When I open the tailgate on my 2012 Lariat 5.0, I get this nasty noise: (see video)

I've owned the truck about 6 months ........... this noise was not there when I bought it ............ it seems to be happening more frequently lately (though not necessarily every time).

Thanks.

PS - Please ignore the 'jingling' sound from the black lab's collar/tags ! (in case you hear that in the background)

Could be a couple of different things causing this. One may be the torsion bar that provides the lift assist may be slipping/snapping. But it sounds too much like what my 07 had for an issue. The plastic bushing is likely cracked. When lifting the gate the bushing is binding in that cup/hinge. The snapping noise is the sound of the plastic as it releases and slips/rotates. I bet if you look carefully at the side of that plastic bushing as you lift the gage, you will see the crack open just before the snapping sound hits. I think you'll need to replace the bushing/torsion bar to fix this, but I just put up with it. It's annoying, but it worked.
Hope this helps

I can see the bushing pivoting/twitching as the sound is made.

If I elect not to address this, do I risk damage to the torsion bar or anything else ?

Unlikely that it will damage anything else. That said, anything can happen, but I wouldn't worry about it. I put up with mine doing this for at least a year or so without anything more than the annoyance of that dam noise.

The only thing that I could see happening, is that over time the plastic bushing could deteriorate completely allowing the torsion bar not to function at all. Giving you the full weight of the tailgate to lift closed. Also as the plastic deteriorates and falls apart eventually it could get to the point that when you open the gate it could drop on that side. Then you'll have to pick that corner up enough to align the striker and latch in order to close and latch the gate completely. Other than that I don't see any other damage occurring. Also keep in mind that the symptoms that I described could take several years to actually happen.
