The difference is, Jim, that when you loose steering, at least your rear end is behind you. With bald on the rear, the front end grips and the rear comes around to lead you where you will go while looking where you came from. It's not only for adverse road conditions. The traction in the rear also applies to panic stops, i.e. a bull walking out in front of you on Hwy 99. Check it out for yourself if it's hard to wrap the mind around, Jim. It took me a while to accept the new thinking too. I always believed in the old school ways, like you. But if you think about it, it really does make more sense. If you have to choose between front or rear for new, I suggest you go rear. Just make sure you don't let those fronts ride too long on there. Prioritize the subsequent front replacement high on the list and have all four in good shape ASAP.
I may just do what Hank suggested and get four used tires to tide me over. The owner states there is tread on all four tires, just that they are sun cracked from being in the sun. I am guessing the car has been sitting at his dad's farm/ranch, as the pic of the engine bay shows quite a bit of dirt.
Just came from the DMV and found out the car has $179 in fees due. Not bad compared to the $761 for the SC I originally wanted to buy, and maybe I can get the owner to drop the price a bit because of the fees. If not, then it will cost me $2,025 to buy it, smog it, register it, and insure it. That figure may go up $8 because I can't remember if the $50 for smog includes the $8 certificate. Which I think is a total rip off now that everything is done electronically.
Just called my favorite repair shop, and the $50 includes the fee. Also went to the property management office with the letter HUD sent me regarding my share of the rent. So, since I have already paid November's rent, they will give me a credit for December's rent, and a partial credit for January's rent. That will be cool, no rent to pay for December. I can use that money to buy gifts with.
What Tim said. There is no way a tire shop will put new tires on front leaving bald on back. Attorneys meal ticket there.
btw sun cracked, would you want to carry anyone in those?
Well, per the owner of the car, the tires are not bald. Just low on tread and sun cracked. No, I would not want to drive the car any more than was necessary. That is why your idea to get four used ones is sounding better and better. Granted 95% of the time it will only be me in the car, but I don't want to risk my life either. I will just be extra careful when bringing it up here. I plan on staying in the slow lane and going 55 just in case. Also, renewing my AAA account is going to be a high priority.
I always get the most out of all my Tires just like I do with my Shoes I ware them down to the name on the Ankle, Jim cregs list is a great place to find used tires just make sure you have a shop that will install them used, like Jose's or Raul's , not Americas tire or Les Swab may not install them.
Hank didn't Regesture Az But been chatin with the AZ boys it's Archery Elk and seen some big racks on my Travels, kind of mis this little Town now if I can only Remember to put in for hunting season next year, have a good one gents
I don't know if I would want to buy tires from CL. I have not had any problems with the used tires I buy at Medina's, so most likely I will go there when the cash is available. Since getting this silver one is going to put me over my max limit, by using up all my VA check money, and my fledgling savings account money. I will have to make the tires last until The middle of November. Or if I just need one I can use the VA's check on the 1st to get it. I will know more when I see the tires in person.
Took a look through Craigslist today just for the heck of it, (and I am bored) and found a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII in Coarsegold for sale for $1,800. Everything works, and it has already been smogged and tagged. Ad was posted two days ago. It is a cream colored car, and there are only two photos of it, both exterior. Only thing I see is a few small dents on driver's door below belt line. Other photo is of the front. Looks good. And he states everything works, and the AC blows cold. If I did not already have an appointment to see the silver car on Saturday, I would definitely give this guy a call. Although $1,800 is a bit close to my limit, and I doubt I could get everything done to get it on the road legally without having to wait until next payday. I'll check out th silver car on Saturday, and if anything major is wrong with it, I'll pass and look into getting the Lincoln. It is on the same MN12 platform, but has the DOHC 32 valve version of the 4.6L engine. (280hp compared to 205 hp)
Happy thirsty Thursday Nor Cal FTE. Insomnia is kicking my bottom again, so I decided to get up and get on the computer. Tried calling the owner of the Silver Thunderbird today but got his voicemail. Maybe he works the swing shift I don't know. Anyway, wanted to confirm I had a ride for Saturday, and asked him for the address so we would know where to go. I finally found the moving box with the GPS I used when I owned the F350. I will take it with me when we go down so we don't get lost. Also have two Motorola family talk radios, for when we drive back up to Fresno we can stay in touch in case something goes wrong with the car. Of course, if the owner doesn't return my calls, I will just assume he has changed his mind about selling the car. I hope the Lincoln will still be available if that is the case.
Happy thirsty Thursday again FTE. I figured if I get up at 8am after only sleeping 5 hours, maybe I will be tired enough to go to bed at a reasonable hour.
I checked on that black on black Lincoln Mark VIII that was down in Gardena, and it has already been sold. I knew that was going to happen. That car was in mint condition, and only $1,500. Wish I could have found a way to get down there and get it.
Oh well, will just have to see what happens this weekend.
Talked to the owner of the silver car, and found out the car is on a non-op, so there are no back fees. I guess the $179 is the fee to get it registered. I am surprised they (DMV) did not tell me it was on a non-op. Anyway, he also says his sister and brother will arrive in Exeter in the morning and take the car in to get smogged. I was shocked to hear that. I know in California, it is the seller's responsibility to smog the vehicle, but I have never had anyone I bought a vehicle from do that. So that will save me time and $50.
I decided to email a guy here locally who is selling a white 96 Thunderbird. He did not have any pics, but said the car needed nothing, except to pay back fees, and get it smogged. He wanted $1,800, but just lowered it to $1,300. So I emailed him, and he sent me three photos of it. Nice looking car. White with a tan leather interior, and a sunroof! None of the other Thunderbirds I have looked at had a sunroof. And tan leather interior? Sweet. Unfortunately, one of the photos was of the back of the car where I could see it has not been registered since August of 2013. I have not received an answer to my email asking when I can come over and look at it. He is about a mile from me. He stated that someone stole the battery 2 nights ago. So I would have to buy one before driving it home. Would be interesting to know how they did that. Did he leave the car unlocked? As much as I would love to have a Thunderbird with tan leather interior, and a sunroof, I think I am going to stick with the silver one. After checking the DMV website, I am estimating the white one's back fees to be $498. Since he lowered the price to $1,300 it is doable for me, just would be a bit tight until next payday. The silver one on the other had would leave me plenty of money to live on until next payday. Still, having leather and a sunroof is enticing.
Happy Sunday Nor Cal FTE! Hope everyone has a blessed day.
Picked up my silver bullet yesterday, and it is even better in person than the photos in the ad portray. No dents or scratches anywhere, not tears or rips in any of the seats, and the headlight covers have not turned yellow with age. It is a one owner car with only 123k miles, and everything works.
This is the condition I expected the green car to be in. I mean if the owner has kept the same car for 20 years, you figure it was pampered. The green one was neglected, but not this one. I found out the owner kept it in the garage all the time. And not only did he smog it before I got there yesterday, he washed it too. And he had all the paperwork, including copies of both parent's death certificates since the title is in both of their names. He also had that one day permit so I could drive it home legally. Also found out the interior is not blue, but grey. Don't know why they put blue in the description. I am very happy with the purchase.
