I thought about that but it still sits on top of the flywheel housing and gets in the way and it might need an even longer cable to reach from there back up to the solenoid.
Yeah, I assumed you would have to use a longer cable, but I though it may lower its position enough to clear the linkage.
What I don't understand, is why your starter relay/solenoid is on the left-hand side of the firewall. I just checked my reprint of the 1949-51 Service Manual, and they show the routing of the cable for the V8 and 6 as the same. The relay is mounted directly behind, and above, the battery tray, with the cable making a straight shot from the relay, down behind the battery, and to the starter. I did note that the M series sixes had the cable routed over the bell housing, but such routing was not pictured for the H series 226.
Looked at several threads of 48-50 trucks with the H series six, and all appeared to have the relay on the left side of the firewall. Also, the linkage looked to all be the same as yours. Somehow, that cable needs to be routed in such a way as to clear you throttle linkage.

The setup for the 6 is different because the battery tray is also on the left. The run from the battery to the solenoid is a straight shot but you have to go across the firewall to get to the starter. The picture below isn't my truck (i don't recall where I got it) but it shows the whole setup.
Great looking truck, and fantastic photo Dan. As I said, I am a V8 guy, and not very familiar with the six equipped trucks.
Looking at the above photo, that cable is absolutely going to have to droop down below the level of the linkage. From where I stand, I see no other way.
I have the 226 and my cable supports hang off the back of the head using the two back head bolts. It seems to work well but based on the other responses where everyone's is off the bell housing mine may not be correct.
Reviving this old thread. Did this ever get figured out? I'm still having the same issue. I published a new thread because the search function didn't show anything but google did.
