226 Starter Cable

My truck came with a 36" cable from the starter to the solenoid. I've been trying to reinstall it but can't get it to fit without it getting in the way to the throttle linkage. I assumed that the cable supports were attached to a couple of the bolts that hold the flywheel housing to the back of the engine so that it would run under the linkage but when I do that it doesn't reach the solenoid. Should the cable be longer or do I need to reroute it?

There should be a support bracket on the back of the head that holds the cable. I will take a pic of mine tonight.

Here is a picture I had found on line that I used to route mine. (I think I might have found it on this site) I haven't had any problems with interference.

Very helpful picture. That's exactly the way I was trying to attach the cable I have but when I do it that way it doesn't reach up to the starter solenoid. I just found a reference in the parts list that shows the cable length at 38 1/2". I think the cable that was on the truck is 2 1/2" too short.

Not sure of how things are set up but could it be that the battery needs to be turned 180%

John, thanks for your reply. I think you misunderstood which cable I'm concerned about. It's the one from the starter to the starter solenoid. It doesn't attach to the battery.

Thanks. Any chance you could also measure the length? That would be real helpful.

Sorry just thought it was the lead from the battery, no harm no fowl. Thinking it was one of those simple things that get overlooked...lol

I had a friend make up a longer cable (39") and installed it just like in the photo above and it still makes contact with the throttle linkage. Is there a difference between the 6 and V8 linkage and maybe I have the wrong one?

The 6 and 8 are different but that looks like the correct one for the 6. I will have to look closer at mine when I get home later this week.

I would consider moving that wire bracket to the next bell housing bolt.

Here's an image showing where the cable was connected on my 226 before removal.

Looks just like mine and the bend in the cable on the left, right in front of the oil filter, is just about where the throttle linkage can make contact.

I thought about that but it still sits on top of the flywheel housing and gets in the way and it might need an even longer cable to reach from there back up to the solenoid.
