I hope it's nothing...

... But my gut tells me otherwise. Monday while here in PA. my truck started makeing a clunking sound when I put it in gear and sometimes when I let off the throttle going 50-60mph. Also when I let off at that speed I'm getting more driveline vibrations that wern't there before. The banging-clunking sound sounds like it's right below my feet. U-joints are good as well as the carrier bearing. Haven't greased the slip yoke in awhile maybe that's it I wonder. Transmission shifts great, other than that sound putting in gear. Any help would be welcome....Bill

Grease that slip yoke. That is classic description of what it does when it is dry.

Jason, would that make it sound like it's right below my feet?

I haven't greased the slip joint in years. Seal has been gone forever too. The splines are basically dry all the time. I would be surprised if thats it.

When you say the u-joints are good you mean....???

Be sure when you check these, the vehicle is neutral and the parking brake if off. CHOCK WHEELS FRONT AND BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This way there is no stress on the drive train and you're more likely to identify a worn one. But.....

My clunk was U joints. That's what I would have guessed.

I had a clunk on take off a few weeks back. Went away when the slip yoke was lubed and re-sealed.

When I installed my ladder bars, I was shocked at how much jolt was gone with the shifts. My wife immediately noticed it as well. Just another angle to look at.

If you are checking joints with the drive shaft installed you won't find many bad ones. Take it out.

Let us know what you find. I had the clunk after JW serviced my trans and replaced my carrier bearing. Never had it before.

Interesting, because I also had that new clunk after the transmission was replaced with the HD unit (the first time). I was told it was the slip yoke, it was addressed, and the noise is gone. Then again, I don't have the greatest confidence in the dealership that has been addressing my issues.

I would grease the slip yoke first and see if that solves the problem. If not, then pull the drive shaft and check the joints. Checking them in the truck doesn't give a true representation of their condition.
