Look at the shifter mechanism there are some two bolts that get loose after time and not allowing to start and even letteinf it go into gear. The other possibility not sure the name ( neutral switch maybe) it connects to your tranny and probably needs adjustment its a white rectangle plastic with little teeth.
If you need to adjust the shifter, this is the procedure:
Cable and Bracket Adjustment:
Place the gearshift lever in the (D) position.
Place an eight pound weight on the gearshift lever. (Just apply some downward force on the lever)
Raise and support the vehicle.
Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual lever. (Lever on left side of Trans)
Unlock the lock tab on the transmission shift cable.
Place the manual control lever in the (D) position.
Place the manual control lever in the first gear position.
Move the manual control lever two detents to the (D) position.
Connect the transmission shift cable to the manual control lever.
Lock the transmission shift cable lock tab.
Lower the vehicle.
Carefully move the gearshift lever from detent to detent and compare with transmission settings. Verify that the vehicle will start in PARK or NEUTRAL and backup lamps illuminate in REVERSE. If not, Steps 1-5 must be repeated and include digital TR or TR sensor adjustment in NEUTRAL. Readjust if necessary.

G'day z31,
I've checked the torx bolts and they are all good and tight.
As this unables me to remove the key from the ignition, I have left it in there on it's lonesome and can still lock the truck up.
I leave it in 'Neutral' and put Hand Brake on good and tight.
This is not ideal soi I need to solve this issue.
I'm on the road at present and don't want to go into too much pulling down of components for fear of getting stranded.
I've seen a rock get lodged behind the linkage at the transmission, preventing it from going into park.
G'day Mark,
As I'm out bush and in some very rugged terrain in the Aussie Outback, that was the most obvious place to first check.
So that linkage mechanism on the side of the gear box and the cabling was the first place I checked and it was and still is all good.
For the third time I decided to take an even closer look a the linkage arm and selector mechanism on the side of the gear box.
And there it was a small 15mm x 5mm x5mm black rectangular stone wedged solidly between the arm and the control mechanism casing.
Being the same colour as the black casing it was almost unnoticeable .
Knocked it out and all is good. Got 'PARK' and can remove key.
I apologise for not seeing this the first time I checked that area even before posting my issue .
Try this. It may well be the issue. It's the same on all Fords of the era.
