06 Navigator reverse light replacement

Hey everyone,
We just purchased an 06 Navigator with 103,000 miles on it and neither of the reverse lights work. How do you access the bulbs for replacement? Do you access them from the inside or outside by the licence plate? I don't want to break anything getting them out and the Haynes manual isn't any help at all. Thanks for any input.

You have to remove the panel off the inside of the rear hatch. (Watch for the 2 screws under the pull strap.) Also, since both bulbs are out it could be the DTR sensor down on the tranny that's bad and not the bulbs. Maybe not, I'm just throwing it out there.

Thanks for the help. It must be the sensor you are talking about, because new bulbs don't work either. Where is the sensor located on the tranny?

It's on the left side of the tranny. You could first have someone stand behind the vehicle (key on) while you run through the gears to see if the lights ever come on. If they do you could try and adjust the DTR sensor. If that doesn't work then replace it. Both the adjustment and R&R procedures are in the attached PDFs.

Thanks for the detailed info. I had my bil put it in reverse while I was messing with the bulbs and they never came on. I will try adjusting the DTR sensor tomorrow afternoon.
