04' F350. I am using/losing coolant so I am going to do the head gaskets, head bolts, ERG cooler, clean the turbo and the upgrade the oil sending unit while I have it apart. I have seen you guys mention deleting the cooler. What are the benefits of deleting it? My truck has no upgrades so would I benefit doing this. My question my seem remedial to diesel guys but I am clueless on diesels. I will upgrade the FICM and Alt next year. My goal is to replace the garbage stock parts to bullet proof it. Advice would be helpful.
The thing with the egr cooler is A: you have a hose that can leak B: if the cooler fails it can dump coolant into the heads C: it puts nasty exhaust into the intake D: Can make your degas puke if it's failed. Deleting is taking out a failure point imo. Most of the stock parts on the engine are good with the exception of maybe the HPOP ( depends on engine year) the main issues would be heads not flat, bad hpop, low fuel pressure, and biggest cause of problems of all---not keeping up with proper maintenance which can lead to the failures. Heads will go when oil cooler clogs, causes egr cooler to go, which can lift the heads causing hg to go. Monitoring temps is a key component of heading off issues and diagnosing the problem correctly which will save you lots of $$$$$.
Did you pressure test the system to make sure it's the head gaskets? I've seen pin holes in radiators look like head gaskets leaking. Make sure you test it before you go through all that trouble.
