I will be replacing the water pump this weekend on my '88 E250 7.3. It doesn't look overly complex, but I was wondering if you guys had any tips to make it easier or anything that I should look out for?
My biggest concern is frozen/rusted fasteners. When I did my thermostat the bolts were very rusty and took a lot of time working them back and forth to get them out without breaking them off. Should I expect this in my water pump bolts? I know a broken bolt can make a 1 hour job into a 2 day job. Thanks
When I did mine on my first idi. I used my special mix of acetone and atf in a spray bottle. And I soaked them every time it "dried" or dissipated. Came out in no time (364k miles)
I've done water pumps on three of these trucks so far, no issues. The bolts all came easily enough; the hardest part is cleaning all the crud off the sealing surface. Also, dealer AC brackets are a pain.
Remember that the two middle top(and bottom?) bolts are shorter than the rest. Make sure these go in the right place, and coat them with silicone before install. Otherwise, you'll get slight dripping/weeping of oil from them.
Also, a wire wheel on an angle grinder makes short work of cleaning crud.
