Haven't talked to my machinist yet, but looking for some opinions based off of your experience and my build expectations. I'm going to have to get my crank turned, but I'm not going nuts with my build so I'm wondering how much is too much?
93 IDIT block
88 N/A pistons and rods
R&D cam
93 stock turbo
3" downpipe to 4" exhaust
Headstuds just because
I see bearing kits up to .030 over. Is that taking off too much for what I'm pushing? I value your opinions and experience over any machinists'.
Definitely don't go in asking to take 30 off. Have the machinist work up from 10 and 20. It's impossible to tell in pics but my old man (master mechanic) said if you can feel a groove (scuff) with your fingernail its at least a few thousandths. I don't know how deep yours feels but that's a ballpark to give you a better idea.
Just take it in and ask em to clean it up. If you want to know what the factory spec is look it up and tell him that number. Should be something like .002
Thanks for the replies. Lol obviously take off as little as possible etc. what I'm trying to figure out is if I wind up taking .0030 off, am I running "too weak" of a crank for my build?
(This is the part where I'd love someone to chime in and say they're running a 350hp beast and they took 30 off without any issues...lol)
I have the N/A motor I'm pulling from truck shortly. I was gonna compare the two and hope for good news. Sadly that one has a rod knock so I'm not expecting it to look too wonderful either.

Eh, might be just fine. Mine knocked badly; parts were spotless inside. The bearings were quite worn, rings totally shot, but all the steel was great.
Keep in mind that the Journals are hardened, so grinding the crank will take that layer away.
Seems like a good candidate for the fingernail test... If you can hook a fingernail on any of the grooves, it probably needs to be ground, If not, I would plastigauge to check clearance, and put it back together.
hahaha...definitely not passing the fingernail test. Definitely needs some attention, i'm just concerned about grinding too much off. I'm just starting to take apart the truck now so i'll have another crank to look at once the motor is apart.
