Angry Stalling in reverse?????

Hey Folks,

I have a 92 Bronco 302 w/ E4OD. Sometimes, when going in reverse (just enough for a 3-point turn), it sputtters, tries to die, and sometimes even craps out completely. I have to restart it and she runs fine until I go in reverse again.

I know that there are inherent solenoid problems with the E4OD and was wondering if a good transmission service/filter change would fix the problem until I can buy the aftermarket solenoid that is available or what the best fix is. Am I looking in the wrong place? It sometimes doe sthis sputter thing at low RPM's and gears like in stop and go gridlock.

Transmission cooler maybe?

Thanks,
Tom

Sounds to me like you need a tune up. Maybe EGR? Does your truck have mass air. I don't remember if 92's have it. Doubt that your tranny is overheating, but i could be wrong. Just a thought.

Stalling in reverse?????

i was having that same problem, and it was my TPS. i dont know exactly why it fixed it but....... also have you pulled your engine codes? you can learn some pretty bad things very quickly that way(or you can learn that your bronco is running great) in the haynes manual itll tell you how to do the test.

Stalling in reverse?????

OK Guys,

Since I bought it a year ago, I have done:

MAP, TPS, Plugs, Wires, Distributor Cap, Rotor, fuel filter, PVC Valve, breather filter, air filters (repeatedly), cut off both catalytic converters, flowmaster, dual exhaust.

MAP and TPS were part of the problem (got stuck at 2K RPM and would not idle down). Getting rid of the cats made it even better. Of course, filters are routine maintennance.

I will pull the codes when I have a chance.

It has 194K Miles, new shocks (Rancho all around), new rotors (Raybestos), nice Kenwood CD Changer, head unit (needs new speakers). I plan to keep it forever (long time Bronco enthusiast). I want my son to eventually have it like I got my Dad's hunting Bronco when I was a teen.

Stick with Autozone parts or go for better? Factory Ford will kill me on cost.

Also guys, would anyone recommend headers for increased performance? As it is with no catalytic converters, there is almost no back pressure to begin with.

I will follow up for future mods in a different thread.

I will let you know what happens with the EGR codes, etc.

Tom

Anything is better than the zone! Advance, CarQuest, NAPA, Parts Plus, All-Pro, or O'Reilly.

Unhappy Stalling in reverse?????

OK Guys,

Here is what I have done.........

EGR Valve and Position Sensor.

Fixed some problems.

Put Catalytic converter back on. Had to for state inspection (did not have time to find someone to pass it). This has caused no problems as it was a new one and not clogged.

Did Transmission gasket and filter- NEW PROBLEM!!!!

Transmission does not go from first to second without a fight (redlines at close to 3K RPM before jerky shift). Seems like not all of the clutches are disengaging at the same time. Then no problem between 2 and 3. Hangs when going in to over dire. Hit OD On/Off switch earlier and it went with no problems.

Going to pull codes again and see what she says. I also have a residual code for the transmission in park sensor.

HELP ME GUYS!!!!
Tom
