I just bought a '79 F150 w/351 and a C6 trans. The seller told me when it is cold it may take up to a minute to start moving in drive. He said reverse works fine. Can someone give me an idea of what to do?
I would first check the fluid level, then your vacuum lines going to the modulator, might have to replace the modulator. Quick, cheap and easy on the outside of the trans.
Fluid and filter change would be next, after all that, cross you fingers.
Those are all good things to check. In this case each one of them are a waste of time and money. The seals in the forward clutch have hardened and need to be replaced. That means the trans needs to be rebuilt.
There are numerous products on the market that claim to "fix" transmission problems such as you describe. At best, most are stop gaps and band-aids.
If the other correct fixes don't work try adding a pint of lacquer thinner to the trans. This will tend to soften hard seals, and cause them to swell at bit. It is definitely a short term band-aid, but can buy you a bit of time. Tends to clean the inside of the trans too.
