C-6 transmission woes

I have a '90 F- 250 w/ a 5.8 L motor and a 3 speed trans. (a C-6 I think). A few days ago while in drive and pulling a #3000 trailer the engine suddenly started to rev up like it jumped into neutral and the truck would not go. Earlier in the day it felt like it was bucking when pulling out. I could still use 1st and 2nd gear but did not have drive or reverse. Today I just tried it again and 1st and 2nd worked for a while and then they quit and just race and whine but will not move. Is the trans completely fried ? If so is it better to buy a rebuilt one at a parts store or have this one rebuilt. Any suggestions will be appreciated

Sounds like a direct clutch failure. I would overhaul the tranny you have unless the transmission housing is damaged. Tear it down and look at it, C6 overhaul is pretty easy and not too expensive.

The forward clutches are probably shot too. I would rebuild what you have. Just make sure you flush your trans cooling system real good what ever you end up doing.
