First off wanted to introduce myself, my name is Jim. First time poster on this board with a new project. I'm a habitual lurker that greatly enjoys the various build threads. I always promise myself I'll start my own and never do. Until now. Introducing Henry, 71 F250 Sport Custom from the Dakotas. A while back his heart gave out and was removed, he was then left in a field. Till I found him and brought him back east.
So the plan began to take shape. I need a 4X4 and I like diesels soo, 4X4 conversion, 6BT, Auto.
So after squirreling away parts for a bit, It begins. A little while with the impact and viola Some time with the torch and now we can start with the fun stuff
and I apologize for the background, I'll make up for it later.
So far I've been sourcing my parts via craigslist. I ended up with a pair of axles off a 77 that very well could have been used as a anchor for a while. The engine and associated bits came from a buddy that parts out those "D" trucks.
They're starting to clean up.
If your looking for backing plates for a D44 the aftermarket bronco ones will work with some minor mods.
If you'll indulge me I'll continue with my story. The install was going along swimmingly. The frame was boxed, the new front Xmember was tacked in place, the mounts installed. Sits quite nicely.
Then I tried to slide the front axle under. Now I understand the major differences in the front crossmember and why they are nec, re 2wd-4wd. So we take a couple steps back and break out the plasma again and things look much nicer now.
Finished up the new new DS mount so now on to the shackles. Oh and to make up for the previously mentioned background.
quinletc, Can't promise I'll keep up the pace. I work shifts so I don't have time to do any work for long stretches. But I need to keep moving, with all the parts cluttering up my garage I barely have room to breathe, much more compact bolted together.
Got some more pics uploaded so I'll add some details. The boxing plates are actually "c" channel, fabbed up, much more rigidity.
The mounts are 1/4" edge banded with 1/8x1/2 Tigged on the inside to keep the bead flush.
Mounts had to be sunk into the crossmember to get the height low enough.
