STEEL BRAKE LINE PROBLEM

1999 F150 has rusted and leaking steel brake lines. I need to replace all of them but do not know if you have to fabricate them or can you buy the complete kit. I am also confused with the flared end. Have not worked with that type of flare. If they need to be purchased where is the best place to buy them ?

Thanks,
edford1

check where it is leaking and where it is rusted......... mine across the rear axle from side to side was OK....... under the truck, from the drivers seat forward it was OK.. my problem was from the adaptor above the axle where the steel line connects to the hose, the steel line was rusted and holes behind the gas tank.. The rear fitting is a normal flare that has been used on trucks for 50 years.. with a 3/16 tube.. The line goes forward under the cab and connects to a second tube under the drivers seat. That is a metric fitting.. from there forward was OK.... I replaced the rear several feet and then cut off the metric fitting and used a compression fitting to the original line. You can get 3/16 brake lines in 30 - 40 - 50 inch lengths at most auto supply stores. I bought two 50 inch lengths and that was plenty...... you will need a coupler to connect those two, then a compressison fitting to connect under the drivers seat.

I should mention my original line from the drivers seat forward was 5/ 1000 (.005 inch) larger than 3/16 inch.......... maybe its metric, maybe it was just the finish... I took a small du-more grinder and polishing wheel and ran around it an inch back until the compression fitting slid on.

BRAKE LINES

Yea the leak is the section that runs along the gas tank. The whole problem is that all of the lines look like they could leak at any time ! This includes the lines coming from the fill canister also. The only one that looks some what ok is the one that runs along the back axle. I agree that the one under the drivers seat is metric because it took metric wrenches for the fittings.
Won' feel good about it unless I replace them all. ????????

I did a 1996 Explorer also. The line out of the ABS valve was good for about 12 inches before it had SOME rust, and was bad by the time it got down to the main horizontal frame area... I did the same fix as above, but cut the line 6 inches from the ABS valve... because it had metric fittings also............. ran down and backward from the ABS... then forward from the axle........ then meet in the middle with a union or second tube coupling.

rather than try to undue all the plastic retainer clamps, I just cut the line 5 ft forward of the rear axle, the disconnected the line at the axle hose, then pulled it out backward toward the rear bumper. I installed the new tube (somewhat pre bent from the front, around several frame brackets, up past the gas tank and ended at the axle. Once you put the final bends and twists into the line, just pop it into the original plastic retainer clamps.
