so I got in a little mud today and noticed I have only one wheel turning like an open diff.
My tag says 3L73 so doesn't that mean it should be a limited slip?
Don't shame me but I know I need to change the fluid since I don't know when the last time it was changed.
I plan on doing both diffs tomorrow.
What fluid do you guys recommend?
i noticed that too some time ago, I reckon the diff needs a torque kick to lock up. I used Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-140 and it seems OK. Also changed the rusty cover for the alu one - Ford wanted outrageous $7 per bolt, so I bought 15 stainless for just over that price
There is a tool that fits in where the axel goes that is a splined set of blocks.
One you put in the vise and the carrier goes on top and then you place the
other tool in the top and use a torque wrench to check the turning force needed
to move the clutch pack. Or something like that. The tool number and the how
to is in the PDF. Tools use for both carriers
Rotator, Differential 205-246 (T86T-4205-A)
Rotator, Limited Slip Differential 205-DS059 (D83T-4205-C) or equivalent
Step Plate 205-D019 (D80L-630-8) or equivalent
That should be all the special tools for both the one piece and two piece carrier.
You still have to get it out of the housing but I think that should be easy enough.
