2003 rear end slipping

Purchased this truck in summer of 2008,everything is wonderful about the truck except when pulling away from stop sign very slowly the truck will lightly shake.I thought the torque converter may be slipping.Under normal and heavy footed takeoff there is no shaking.I spoke to a Ford mechanic and he said the limited slip rear axle clutches are probably to blame. He also suggested to change rear axle oil from 75-140 to mineral based 80-90 with slip additive. He has changed some rear clutches but with very limited sucess. The service manager said it would take $800 to replace the clutches.Truck has 37000 miles on it with a 3.55 axle. The limited slip axle worked very well this winter.Should I have the clutches replaced, change the oil (which oil) or just leave alone?

Welcome to FTE NHSM! Change the differential fluid but do not take the advice of the mechanic. Put in the recommended 75W-140 synthetic fluid and a 4 oz. bottle of friction modifier. Good luck!

depending on how mechanically inclined you are you can take your your diff apart and take the "guts" to a gear shop, have em tear it down and sand the clutches, took mine apart to have the clutches and bearings replace the gear shop was the cheapest they said the bearings were fine and told me what they would do with the clutches that would make them like new, its been a year and still working fine

If it does it when you are driving straight, then it is not the clutches.

There was a TSB out concerning that problem. My '03 had the same problem. It was still under warranty, so, I didn't have to cover most of the expense. Just deductible. The "clutch packs" need to be replaced. Here's the link.......https://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/tsb.php/m-FORD/y-2003/d-F150
