The 4R100 in your truck is a four speed, not a five speed. So 4th gear IS overdrive. You have 1, 2, 3, and 4. There is no other gear above 4th.

Even if it wasn't locked up you needed to replace it if you want the rebuilt transmission to last more than a few miles. NEVER reuse the old converter when rebuilding a transmission, unless you have the converter cut open and rebuilt.

Thanks for the info on the gears. I didn't know that.

So I will be needing a little help on what parts I need. I will get a whole rebuild kit but the broken stuff I'm not sure exactly what is all is and want to make sure I have it. There was a bearing in there that fell apart and a gold colored part that is cracked in 3 spots. I will take pictures tomarrow.

Sorry to hear that your trans came apart but I would bet that OD snap ring came out and from there it started to eat parts. Here is the cure for that problem.
Sure Lock Spiral Snap Ring - 36744-01 - Sonnax

If you are going to build your own trans and if you do your homework on the design flaws of the 4R100 I am sure you will do a better rebuild than a local tranny shop. Most tranny shops just throw new parts in it and send you on your way.
Here is a link to my trans build it might be helpful.

Would this be a good time to replace that (rear seal?) that pukes on backing up with a heavy load?

I've only read about it and filed it in the memory banks as "if I ever tear into my trans" Might be good for OP?

That's the infamous mechanical diode. You can't get another one of them. There are kits available to replace it with a sprag type one way clutch.

That's the 4R70W version of the mechanical diode. It's similar to the one that you had. It isn't identical.

I don't think that drum has all the pieces you need to convert a mechanical diode trans. Home - Transtar Industries list this:
555C Direct Drum Conversion Kit, E4OD Ratchet to 45 Element Sprag (4 Clutch)........... 1 98-Up 36555EK
which is what I think you need. You might contact them and ask. It does concern me that this is listed for 98 and up, the ratchet (mechanical diode) was only in 2001.

It looks like the direct drum, you posted, is the correct one. It has the needed thrust washer that goes under the roller sprag type one-way clutch. Also, in one of your pics, it looks like the Center Support housing may be worn. It is one of the trouble spots that Ed (BadDogKuzz) was referring to. It would be a good time to upgrade to a machined Center Support housing with steel spacer ring while you are in there. While the ATSG manual is a good reference for proper parts orientation, it leaves a lot to be desired in blueprinting an automatic transmission. There are some steps, you can take, that will give an increase in longevity/reliability.
