Rear brake help

So it started off with a little leak in my rear left brake line. Not a big deal. Until i found my bleeder valve screw to be stuck. Then i broke it off trying to loosen it.

At this point, I have the brake drum off, with a little help from the BFH and a crowbar. It seems like nobody has ever taken this stuff of in its twenty years of life. Anyway, so immediately, this little cable with spring fall off. If you look at a "rear drum brake assembly" diagram, it is what they are calling the "self adjusting spring cable" or something similar.

My question is, is this something I need? Something i can myself clamp a new cable onto the hardware? (The cable is what broke) or should i suck it up and order a new one?

And of course, any advice on using an easy-out on the bleeder valve would be greatly appreciated... Sorry if i am ranting or bitching, it just literally is depressing to me, what originally seemed like a fun little replacement turned to a multiple day struggle, because I struggle to find anybody who is willing to help me.. So I am coming back to the FTE family for help!!
And i do greatly appreciate your guys' help. Thanks again.

Both wheel cylinders and hardware kits are cheap, you'd be better off just replacing all the old junk.

I hear ya on the frustration part. Many times tasks that I thought would be awful, well they are pretty bad but went OK, or easier than expected.

It's the simple stuff that can kick my *** sometimes! It just snowballs. I would agree, replace the offending wheel cylinder with a new one. Invest in a set of line wrenches if you haven't already. New hoses in back too.

The self adjuster cable can be bought by itself, but more often bought as part of a brake spring kit, and not much more money. Also (about $5) buy a set of brake spring pliers. An old screwdriver with a notch will work, but the brake pliers have some other functions too. With brake work especially, having the right tools helps a lot. Check out YT videos for how to vids.

You can use RockAuto to see what's what parts wise, but I would bounce those numbers off your local guys. If you have to return parts - local is the way to go, unless you're positive on ordering the correct part.

Here's a really good basic tutorial, it took me a while to find the actual link. It runs a few pages and if you follow this carefully you'll do a first class job right out of the box.

I agree might as well replace both wheel cylinders while you have the brake system one . You have to bleed all the brakes any way

I would suggest to do both sides, new cylinder was 5 dollars at NAPA, everything is dirt cheap for the brakes. There are several ones, the diference is in the two bolts holding them to the back plate, be sure to have the old one with you.
I would also inspect front brakes and get everything exchanged at once so u bleed it and have it done for years. The front rubber hoses are prone to colapsing inside and restrict the flow, 9 dollar a piece, definetaly something to consider. It might take the whole afternoon, but on the other hand brakes are the most important.

At Advance Auto any way, any adjuster parts are sold seperate from the spring kit. Cable can be sold seperat or purchased with a self adjuster kit. I have to still adjust mine manualy and mine are in good working order.

Ok. Sorry guys, I've been busy with it among other things, but if you were wondering: I replaced all the brake parts on both sides, and have one side e-brake cable replaced, (gonna have to wait for the passenger side and intermediate cable) but the brakes seem great!
Also, im keeping the drums because they still work even though they are pretty badly rusted. The inside where the brakes go is okay, and The advance auto guy told me it was still perfectly fine to use.
But anyway, the new brake parts all look shiny and new and im proud of it! Haha
And yes, i had to get the little cable seperately.
Thanks for your help guys, id say im almost done with this brake "project"!
