i have a 91 mazda navajo well today the rear pass side brake started to grind and make a clunking noise well to mak a long story short i pulled the tire off when i got home and low and behold the rear drum has 2 cracks in it and it chewed though the back brack shoe. my question is what would couse this 1 month ago it was fine so it looks like i have to dump some more $$ into my truck
Sounds like your brake was dragging, causing excessive heat, causing the worn shoes and cracked drum. Several things could cause this including a failed spring, stuck wheel cylinder, or a sticking parking brake cable. Check the other side also to make sure it's not showing signs of excessive heat. If so, you may have a sticking RABS valve, but that's a whole other issue.
When you re-do the brakes, make sure you use a new spring set. I would suggest using the correct tools also. Vise grips or other improper tools can nick the springs, creating stress points that will break after repeated spring action.
I agree with sjwoody, it was the brake shoe that caused the cracks in the drum, not the drum that caused the brake shoe failure. You might also check your emergency brake cable and make sure it isn't hanging up somewhere along the line.
i will have to check the things that you said here is a pic of the rear brake shoe lol
i was on my way to get the new parts it all ways seem that things happen that way
