To tune or not to tune.....

To tune or not to tune.....
That is the question, im so on the fence my *** hurts from sittin here so long. My truck has an edge evo which i have had on factory settings since the day i bought it. I only retain it for its display of temps.
I dont care about having the fastest diesel around. Honestly im not unsatisfied with my truck as its is. Big air filter, 4" exhaust.
But who doesnt want a lil more, right?
My biggest concern is i do no want to sacrafice longevity of the engine or transmission for more power now.
If there is a tuner that accomplishes this im interested, otherwise i will leave it as it is.
Like i said, i have 4" turbo back and the big air filter installed. Transmission is in shop getting rebuilt better than factory, but all i know so far is billet torque converter.
Next thing i will probably put on the truck is bellowed up pipes and a fuel crossover. Guages and then elimination of the edge evo tuner are also in the very near future.

I used to ask the same question years ago. I don't pull as heavy as most here, with my boat/trailer at 5,500#. Our slide in camper is around 2500#-2800#. The rare occasion when I haul both though, (about 16,500# GCVWR), I am always impressed with how well these rigs perform. Like you, all I have is intake and 4" exhaust. With the family and camper fully loaded, we went to Yellowstone last year, and rarely did I ever have to back off the throttle to tame EGT's on the mountain passes.
I'm perfectly happy with it's power and performance in stock form, so I see no need for a tuner or chip. I would rather put the money towards timely maintenance and proactively replacing aging parts. I also have the infamous diode tranny, so I have that to consider as well. I'll just keep providing it clean air, fresh fluids, and good fuel.

If you get a chip, you'll have to do something to the turbo to deal with the surge. Gauges are always a good idea, and of course a shift kit if you've got an auto transmission.
I drove a stock truck for a while, then finally gave in to Tony's ribbing and put a chip in my truck.
Not sure on the longevity part. I've only got 515,000 miles on my truck so far.

Since you have a 2001 and the trans is in the OR as we speak, be sure to mention "fix the diode" to the shop. Now is the time to throw everything you can into the rebuild.
I always recommend tuning. Extra HP can be had for little coin. Keep the goals reasonable and no other mods are necessary. A tow tune to firm up the shifts is a natural. I have DP and like it, but plenty out there.

Back in the truck is too late - you can still save some money now.
Gauges and OBDII gauge/tool. You'd be amazed how many trucks are limping along, but the owners can't know without another truck to compare - or at least all the sensor readings to compare. My strong opinion is shared in the Custom Tunes link in my signature.
