SuperChips Tuner Question

I bought a second hand Superchips Micro Tuner before I started to get a grasp on diesel theory and also before my gauge kit has arrived (on order). I have it set to the lowest setting and really like the low end and shift points, but am concerned that reprogramming the pcm is perhaps not the best route to go. I have no other mods installed yet. In fact I am thinking that perhaps using a tuner is a bad idea period. The literature says it is designed for a non-modified engine, but isn't it just increasing boost? This will increase EGT's! And perhaps air intake temperatures. How dangerous is it to run on the lowest setting wihout gauges? It is certainly increasing stress on the engine. And premature demise of the turbo.

Other things I noticed. My speedometer is now off by about 5 MPH. My top speed is reduced.

Right now I am thinking I will do mechanical mods only until such time as I can have a chip custom burned.

I am of course a complete newbie, but have been reading a book on diesel theory and it is helping a lot. So, hopefully my questions will turn to answers sooner rather than later.

Any thoughts?

First off it's also increasing fuel, just increasing boost is only half the equation to getting more power. You have to have more fuel to mix with that air. It's really the extra fuel that causes EGTs to get hotter, not more air. I would be more worried if the tuner get's higher hp thru increasing cylinder pressure then anything(or atleast that's the biggest concern with the 6.0s).

Personally, I wouldn't even run a stock truck without gauges. Alot of people have run these things on the lowest setting and have not experianced any troubles. If you don't rag on it as soon as you get out of the garage(or wherever you park it) then more then likely you'll be alright.

Do you have an auto tranny? If so, being that you have the 7.3 engine that is going to be more of your weak link then anything else. 7.3s have been known to be more resilient to the basic mods then the 6.0s, with the exception of the auto tranny.

I would definately advocate the custom chip. Even with having no mechanical mods.

I have decided against using the Superchip tuner. Unless I am in stop and go traffic it runs fine the way it is. I will probably do the FPR shim, will definitely do the 6637 mod, and eventually the down pipe and exhaust. The tranny is something I have prioritized, but since I am not towing I am going to wait until I find someone that is very good at rebuilding them. Bottom line for me is I don't want to chip a stock unit. Then after it is mod'd I will need a custom chip.

And yes, I knew about the fuel. Just forgot to add it into my original post. Upon reading it again I can see several other errors too.

Thanks.
