AC- Air Conditioner stopped working

I'll give you a lead, but I have nothing concrete to offer. I'm old school. the cars back some years ago.....when you stomped the accelerator, the A/C would stop temporarily. A safety feature...if you needed to go in a hurry to avoid a wreck you wanted all horsepower going to the engine for power. Now I recognize that the mechanical systems have changed but it seems the old features are still there.....just need to figure out how it's controlled. I would do some web search, it may be a generic issue across all companies/models. Good luck!

I know your dealer would be happy to cool things off in your Explorer. How many miles are on it? I'll research some ways to help.

The Explorer has almost 50,000 miles. Took it to the dealer and they said the AC compressor is bad and wanted $1,000 to fix it.
I'm not sure it's the compressor though. You can see it kick in and out as you turn the AC on and off plus the pressure on the low side is high when the compressor kicks on. I seems more like a blockage to me.
Crystal if you can help that's great but I'm going to have to get a 2nd opinion from a private shop. It looks like the compressor is about $325 but again I'm not sure that's the problem.
Thanks,
Bob

the old school (and some newer models too) did use vacuum to cut the power to the compressor only when it was floored...
I actually bought a compressor cutout kit for a few of my old cars... easy install and the fan would still run, but just turn off the compressor while under heavy load.
