I have a 2002 Explorer XLT that has delveloped a musty smell in the AC. In similar cases in the past, I have gotten rid of such AC odors by spraying Lysol into the AC air intake vent. This has always worked well for me. Trouble is, I am not sure exactly where the air intake is on this vehicle. I stood on my head in the floorboard on both sides a little while ago with a flashlight, but I never found it, or at least I didn't recognize it if I saw it. Anyone have any idea where I might find it? Gotta get rid of that funky smell.........
I dont know about under the dash, but i'd just spray it into the air intake at the base of the windshield on the exterior. If you run the AC on fresh only & turn it off, but leave fan on high for the last couple minutes before you park it for the night you can probably prevent the smell.
Thanks for the reply, 87XLT! I actually thought of that after I posted, but I haven't tried it yet. It's not raining today, so I will give it a shot as soon as my wife gets home from work.........
Yeah, that should do the trick. BTW, i've read that on newer GM's the blower motor is on a timer that keeps it running after the engine is shutoff. This dries out the AC evaporator so that mold does'nt grow overnight.
Wife & I do the same thing -87 Ranger/95 Taurus- by driving the last mile of the day with the AC off/fan on high.
Think my 92 exmplorer has that timer feature in it, on hot days when i have the ac on high through out my driving when i shut the car off the fan stays on then shuts off in a few min.
