I just went through this, I really thought about aftermarket mirrors, but found a nice set of take off OEM on Ebay from a seller in Indiana.
I only wanted to do this one time.
I have a '99, so there was no plug and play.
I didn't have to have the power fold and telescoping.
I used covered male/female spade connectors for the 3 mirror power wires on each side, and common 4 flat trailer connectors for the running light, signals, heat and ground, worked out real well.
I think if you have lighted and heated mirrors now it would be a plug and play....
Plugs are different. With newer Ford mirrors (takeoffs) you'll need to use some adapter plugs to make it look like OEM wiring. Otherwise, you have the option mentioned above. I believe I've read, though, that the newer aftermarkets can be had with plugs which match your existing setup.
What are you going from and to? I used the following adapters to install later mirrors on my '01 Excursion. Mirror turn signals don't work (requires add'l wire) but mirror control and heaters do.
