Anyone know where i could get an original style wiring harness? been looking and all i can find is sections. Like a drivers headlight one that is $130.
Toader, the original wiring is made up of multiple harnesses. The big one is under the dash, connects to circuit breaker, then has leads that you connect the other harnesses to. So if you are only finding "sections" then you are indeed finding the correct original wiring.
Ok thanks, I may not go original wiring since its only $280 for a 8 circuit aftermarket wiring kit vs the $530 I currently have the original wiring totaled too. That isn't including tail light wiring. My instructor knows where to get a wire wrap that groups all the wiring together that will look good.
Fairly large update thanks to me being lazy. Got the body torn off and frame blasted and painted. Ran all new brake lines and rebuilt the drums. Welded in a new transmission cross member. Got some slotted mags for free so that is what i will being going with for now. Going to pick up a flywheel this week so I can put the motor in. After that its mostly wiring, rebuilding the carb, and crossing my fingers that it will start. Rebuilt the top and bottom of the tailgate and straightened the center, it was real bad but i managed to save it with a little effort. Currently rebuilding the lower part of the running boards and will finish them in the next week or so.
Holy crap! You are doing an amazing job on this thing. The majority of the sheet metal it came with looks great. Your repairs and welding make me want to tackle some of my difficult stuff. I wish I had an instructor to teach me these skills. Keep up the good work, it's awesome!
Your work looks good! You are fortunate to have access to all of that equipment. I am looking forward to seeing the engine and trans on the frame and the outcome of your running board project. How are your grades?
Thanks for the compliments guys. Really enjoying working on this truck. It is all I want to do even on the weekends. Another quick update. Got the motor in for what I am hoping is the last time. Got a few pictures of the running boards on the truck and a couple showing how much I replaced. Plans for this week are to hopefully crank and run the motor. Finish welding running boards so I can get the bed, cab, and running boards on for the final time. Hopefully will start wiring end of this week or early next.
Thanks again guys. Got the motor running, seems to idle well. Unfortunately the previous owner of the motor cross threaded where the fuel line goes into the carb. Was able to find one on ebay for $45 though and a rebuild kit for 30. Got the running boards and tailgate in epoxy primer. Getting a throw-out bearing tomorrow morning and going to start running exhaust. Not long and I can start wiring. I will also post a video with the exhaust finished.
Our cat came running to look outside when I played your video about five times. It took a long time for me to get my H series 6 to idle right. I finally found a NOS carb with a snug fitting throttle body shaft. Before that I had to have the choke pulled out partially pulled out to make it run. I checked every possible place for a vacuum leak. Finally determined that it was a worn throttle body shaft.
Another update on the motor. Got the exhaust finished. Nothing else was going as planned so I took a break and put exhaust on. Got it to idle lower, this is with a non rebuilt card and without the timing set. Things are going slower than I expected. Got the fuel pump primed and it pumping fuel great. Sediment bowl is leaking so i plan on getting another gasket for that. Wheel cylinder was also missing the brass fitting inside where the lien hooks up so I had to order a new one since it would take to long for Macs to ship a replacement. Still hoping to get the cab on by the end of the week so I can start wiring when I get back from spring break. After that hopefully things will start clicking along a little faster.
