My 88 F250 with 460 engine is not getting any fuel to the injectors. The truck has been running great with no problems. Saturday After pulling a trailer in a parade, my son backed the truck out of the driveway, it died and we could not get it restarted. I was able to get it to run for a few seconds with starter fluid so I know I am getting spark. when I switch tanks the indicator changes levels to correspond with the selected tank. when I turn the key on I do NOT hear the fuel pump running at all.
Things I have tried:
I have changed the fuel pump relay, No change.
Things I am going to try:
Change the fuel filter - Probably needs it anyway.
Test the fuel pumps to see if they are working.
Check the tank switch to see if there is a problem there.
The relay did not click come to think of it. The new relay had five pins instead of four like the old one.
The fuse looked to be OK but I should test it or just replace it.
The problem seems to be at the fuel pump relay. There is 12+ volts going into it (yellow wire) but only 3 or less volts coming out ( brown wire) this is with the key on engine not running. The coil side only has 3 volts going through it.
Sounds like you have an open circuit from the EEC Relay to the Fuel Pump Relay. When the EEC relay is energized it provides power to the Line side of the Fuel Pump relay coil on the Red wire.
These two diagrams may help:
You should have +12 VDC at the coil whenever the key is in the Run or Start position.
OK I have been trying to find out why no power was getting to the fuel pumps for several day with no head way. I have a friend who is a mechanic help me. He pulled out his testing equipment and proceeded to do the same tests that I already completed. I was telling him everything that I had tried and mentioned the Inertia switch. He stopped and asked where that was located. I showed him, he reached under there, came up and said try starting it. Put the key in turned it and the truck started right up. Apparently when my son went to back it out his foot slipped off the E-brake and hit the switch. I thought it would take a lot more than that to trip it.
rla2005 you had it pegged! I just didn't know about a reset button.
