OK I have a transmission out of 1998 16 passenger bus. Same size engine I want to make sure it will go in my 1999 for f350 super duty 7.3 diesel. How much fluid to fill the transmission and torque converter.
Might bolt in, but the electronics are different. I've seen discussions regarding putting a 4R100 in place of a E4OD, but not vice-versa. I am, however, certainly no expert.
I suggest that you edit your thread title to include something related to "E4OD to 4R100 swap", and Mark K will probably chime in (he was a Ford transmission engineer and is extremely knowledgeable). You do this by editing your initial post and click the "Go Advanced" button in the lower right corner of the post window, and that is where you can edit the thread title.
1998 was the year they made the switch from the E4OD to the 4R100. I am not 100% sure when the 7.3L changed transmissions. They are basically the same. The 4R100 improved strength with increased sensors. Maybe someone will come in and give you full approval, but things look good at this point.
I am not 100% sure when the 7.3L changed. Good luck!
The 7.3 changed in 99.5 production. But, I don't recall the changes
affect the transmission mounting. It basically introduced a new HPOP, Injectors, Turbo, and some others.
Although, the are some differences between the two. I'm pretty sure the early 99's had the 4R100 as well ? Maybe Mark K will know for sure?
The early 99's did come with the 4R100 in the pick up line. I don't know for sure about the 98 bus line since there were no 98 pick up's made.
Either way, both transmissions are close enough they should hold about the same amount of fluid.
In calendar year 1998, Ford was installing 4R100's in all the pick ups. Hopefully they were doing the same for the buses. Does the transmission pan have a drain plug on it?

Just want to make sure, we are talking a Ford bus right? Internationals would probably have an Allison behind them.
Is the pickup a two wheel or four wheel drive? If it's a two wheel drive the trans will bolt right in. If it is a four wheel drive you can stop here because it won't work. But there are other problems.
When was the pickup manufactured? There is a data tag in the driver's door opening that has the month and year the truck was made. I need to know if it is January 1999 or later, or before January 1999.
Next, look at the trans from the bus. Does it have two sensors with electrical sensors on top? One would be right after the bellhousing, and the other near the rear of the transmission.
