I need a 4r100 auto trans for my 2002 f250 superduty 7.3 diesel 4x4, I keep seeing the E4OD and the 4R100 listed on ebay, rebuilders, etc. for sale, are they the same trans?
I think they consider the 4R100 to be an "upgraded" E4OD. Not sure that I'd go from a 4R100 to an E4OD... the internal electronic controls are probably a little different. You might ask down in the transmission forum to see if anyone knows for sure.
From my understanding, a big part of that upgrade was the torque converter. I'm not sure I'd replace a factory part with a lesser part. The 2002 PSD is also putting out more power than the E40D had to handle in the early PSDs.

that is what i thought as well, upgraded torque converter, and i think i different pan. i also would only put a 4r100 in your turck
Ive always heard the 4r100 is the heavy duty version of the e4od,stronger internals for hard use, Lightng, diesels,V10's.Its basically the same design.
