Trouble Reversing

I just bought my first f-150 XL 5.4 2006. The person that sold it to me said it was having problems backing up. I saw him reverse it but now I tried reversing it and it won't reverse. Any suggestions on what it might be? Or do I just take it in to a shop and see what happens?

When you try to reverse does the engine rev, or does it seem to be working against a load?

It just revs, like it was on neutral. I was able to reverse it when I put it on low 4x4. It just moves slowly.

That tells me that the trans is probably toast. The transfer case appears to be working, as does the rear axle.

Yup took it into a shop and they did a completed rebuild with 2 year warranty. It cost me $1453 with taxes and parts included.
