The other day I was trying to back out of the yard and I couldn't move over to reverse. I have an 83 f150 with a 351w and 4 speed manual. I can feel the notch but it wont give. Any ideas?? thanks
in my truck i know sometimes the truck needs to roll forward or backward to get it into reverse. the reverse isnt synchrod or anything and it takes a second to get it in there. it will also grind unless you are at a dead stop. Just my 2 cents.
What might have happened is the screw that holds the lever to the reverse gear might have snapped off, it happened once in my '82 F150. Its the screw on the transmission that looks similiar to the fill plug. But you won't be able to tell for sure unless you drop the transmission and open it up.
I know my T18 on my 81 F150 sometimes won't go into reverse, so I throw it into 1st gear, than drop it into reverse, since first and reverse gears uses the same shaft, I think; or.....
pop it in neutral, pop the clutch out, then in, than drop it in reverse.
