I have a '96 Ranger with a 4.0, extended cab, auto transmission,ac. When it's hot out side (tucson) my engine developes a an intermitent whine that seems to come from the area of the mass air flow sensor next to the air filter. It will fade a way above 1500 rpm. The engine runs fine, mechanics have never found anything wrong. It's been doing it for a couple of years now. It almost never occurs during cooler months.
Since I recently found this site I thought I would ask the members here. The last mechanic suggested i try and find a used air sensor unit/housing and switch it out. It's just very irritating when you pull up to a stop light and your engine starts making an extremely loud noise.
Thanks.

My neighbor had a 94 Ranger 4.0 that sounded like a fog horn when it was idling. Give it some gas quiet let it idle fog horn. It bothered me more than it did him, so I never looked at it.
A few years later it wouldn't idle and we swapped out the IAC/idle air control valve and that took care of the idling problem & the fog horn.
Welcome to FTE.
It's likely the IAC = Idle Air Control, if it makes a wooo sound that varies with engine rpm & the AC on.
If it goes away when you turn the AC off, you'll know. My 99 4.0L has always done it too. No harm, just an aggravation, but you'll get accustomed to & will likely come to ignore it over time. Some have had success changing the IAC. I had to replace my OEM IAC for other reasons & did so with a BWD & it still woooo's.
