Question Tire Question

I've got a 2000 Excursion XLT w/ a V10 and 4.10 LS rear end. I've just run the stock tires out of useful tread at nearly 50,000 miles. The old tires are Firestone Steeltex R4S, LT-265/75R16 with a "D" load rating. I want to go to Steeltex AT, but nobody in my area has them in a "D" rating; they only have them in an "E" load rating.

So my question is, are "E"-rated tires OK? I think I've seen "E" tires mentioned in other threads but I'm not sure

I tow an 8000# trailer with it fairly frequently, and used to tow snowmobiles when we were in AK. Love the power and room!!

Tire Question

E tires are capable of carrying more weight than D. The Continental tire site (http://www.cgtcommercial.com/home/me...n/medtrd87.htm)
Says that the load rating has replaced the ply rating that used to be on tires. D is/was 8 ply and E is/was 10 ply

I just upgraded to E also and they seem to have alot stiffer sidewall.

I just had them put on last night, so I haven't really been able to really evaluate them yet, but at first impression the ride is not noticably different.

Tire Question

hrkdrivr,

I am no tire expert, but I just bought a 2003 X Limited and had them take off the Steeltex D's and put on Michelin LTX M/S E's after a month. My X wandered all over the road and I read more anti-Steeltex than pro...and nothing but praise for the LTX's. The ride home yesterday, 90 miles of interstate...the X's road manners and handling were terrific verses riding on Steeltex. As heavy as the X is, I feel the E load tires should be on it.

Good Luck

Richard

I also put LTX M/S 'E's on mine. I was never afraid of the Firestones but after losing two of them due to road debris by 40k miles, I decided to upgrade.

I didn't feel much difference in ride between the 'D's and the 'E's provided I run them at the same pressures. You don't need to inflate the 'E's any higher if your not loaded down or towing.
