I've got a 2K Excursion with about 7000 miles. I've noticed that the front tires are wearing on the inside and outside of the tread. I think this normally indicates low tire pressure, but I have been measuring tire pressure consistently and keeping it set at recommended levels. Is this type of tire wear expected on Super Duty/Excursions w/ 4WD? My truck has the Steeltex AT's on it. Thanks, Bill
Those Steeltex tires are junk. Many have been recalled as part of the Firestone fiasco. God knows what defect Firestone built into your tires that may be causing the odd wear.
I'd get some better tires ASAP if I were you then monitor the wear on the good tires. If one of those Firestones lets go at 70mph you'll have a grisly wreck that may kill a member of your family. Rollovers at speed are extremely dangerous.
I put 305/70-16 Goodyears on my 4x4 diesel after 700 miles, and gave the Firestones to a buddy (before all the recall news came out). The Goodyears are wearing normally at 16,000 miles.
You mentioned keeping the tires at recommended pressure....On my 4x2 V10 there are 2 "recommendations" The light load soft ride, 38f/45r and the full gvwr of 45f/55r....what pressure are you maintaining? Keep in mind that you get ONE "free" alignment in first year of ownership.
At 7k miles it is time for a rotation, but I'd try a bit more pressure, unless the ride gets too bouncy...the tires are rated to 65psi.
ALSO: Especially at these higher truck tire pressures, gauges are VERY suspect....BUY A GOOD ONE...don't trust the gas station, or those $2 cheapies!!!! I've got a drawer full of pocket gauges that vary as much as 10psi!!
I have the tire pressure at 45/55 for now. Ride is harder, but not too bad. The tires get rotated this week. Thanks for the recommendation on the air pressure gauge. Accurate measurements are key.
I haven't had any problems with tire wear on my 2000 limited 4x4 w/v-10 which I have 47,000 miles on it. Same tires - Steelex. I have them rotated every 10,000.
