I heard in the news that these tires are blowing out too, apparently they've created some incidents on the Fords, I also heard that these trucks are handling these blowouts pretty good, no roll-overs so far, I understood the GM's are not taking it that good with some fatalities involved.

Any experiences out there?

I've heard there have been nearly 170 complaints about tread separation.

Where are you getting this info? I just bought a new Excursion and have heard stories about the Steeltex ranging from (a) the may be recalled soon to (b) the Steeltex is pretty good tire. Just trying to figure out the real story is.
Thanks.

Some info I got was from CNN, and that same evening I saw a local channel in Florida that said that the goverment has began an investigation on these tires. This was on the last days in September.

Enjoy your Excursion!

If you watch the inflation pressure, and don't overload, the Steeltex are a very long wearing tire. I have 14K miles on mine, they all look fine.

I just took delivery on a 2001 Excursion Limited. I have the SteelTex A/T Tires. Anyone know what the best inflation is on these for a family of 5--no other load? Tires say 65 psi max
-door panel says 38 front/45 rear--I put 43 front/50 rear Just to avoid underinflation. Is that good? What about when towing a 24 ft camper weighing approx. 5000 lbs? Any info on mud flaps for excursion? Does dealer install these? And any news about the 265/75R16 a/t steeltex having problems?

The 38/45 on the door is the light load pressure & good ride. See the metal tag on the door pillar for full GVWR psi. I think it is 45/55. At any rate stay with the low psi for a couple of weeks till your Ex loosens up a bit. I tried the 45/55 when new and it was horrible. I've settled in at 2000 miles right about the same as you. (2wd v10). Note that at 65 psi these tires would be rated at 3000lbs x4= 12000lbs....They >ARE< oversized!
I think there is a load vs pressure chart at the Firestone website.

Any more news about the Steelex 265 r75 16 A/T tires? I heard it was tires on Suburbans and GM trucks--made in Mexico--My excursion A/T's are made in Canada
Also --any gas milage updates for the 2001 limited V10? My computer thing is saying 9.6 and 9.7 average--I have 300 miles and change on it.
Thanks

Bill:

Press and hold your "MODE" button in your trip computer for about 10 seconds, it will reset your computer and it slowly will calculate your actual MPG (it takes about 100 miles for it to display it accurately)

When I picked up mine it showed 6.5 MPG but my CSR at Ford told me this trick and it worked, I get 11.3 MPG in Dallas, and 12.5 in highway, these numbers are for a 4X4 though, you should get better mileage if yours is 4X2.

Thanks again. Hey--anyone know the best electric trailer brake controller to put in. I have a 24 ft Prowler camper I'll be towing . Thanks again-- also any other new info about the tires?

No way I would ride my family around on Firestone tires.

New tires are cheap, and you can go to a bigger size.

Your mileage will improve with age. I have 37K on my 2000 4x4, v10 and get 16-17 on back roads that keep it below 2000rpm, 15-16 on the highway with the wife , 4 kids and all the stuff that goes along with 'em and 11-12 fartin' around town. Bottome line is I consistently average 13.5 to 14.3 per tankful. (Your driving style will have an effect on this.)

However, why do so many of you out there buy a $40K+, 7200lb. truck with a V10 and worry about fuel mileage. Drive it and just enjoy the view!!

Had tread sep. problems with the two front tires on my 2000 X. Firestone replaced them (prorated of course) and recommended that I keep my tire pressure at 55. This all happened at approx. 24K miles. So far no problems with the replacements.
The dealership I ordered my 2002 X from has agreed to switch out the Steeltex tires for the BF Goodrich A/T tires I requested.
