Main Bearing Caps, 4.6L V-8

How do I remove the main bearing caps?

I've removed every fastener from the block, but the crankshaft, spinning freely, won't budge out.

Please let me know what to look for so I can remove the main caps and remove the crankshaft.

Thanks.

Thought there were/are two main bearing cap bolts drilled into the block and two more from the side?

If those have been removed I've heard the modular motors are so precisely machined the main caps might have to be struck in order to dislodge them.

Is this block out of the vehicle or on a stand? Don't wanna have the crank suddenly fall on your head!

Yes, there are two fasteners drilled into the block and two more from the sides.

If I can get this picture to upload, you'll see what concerns me.

There is what appears to be some form of bushing between the side of the cap and the block. I can't tell if this bushing is flush against the block, or if it somehow is inserted into the block.

The other side is definitely inside the side of the main cap.

I've personally never had one of these motors apart so can't add much more. Several here have gone through various stages of lower end repair, I'd thought they would have chipped in by now.

Hoping someone comes along with a good answer for you.

I'm assuming you have a Romeo block.

Those are jacking inserts for preload. After you have the side bolts removed, shine a light into the bolt hole. You will see a hex for an allen key.

Loosen the preload bushing with the allen key. Main caps will now come off normally.

Use a 5/16 Allen key and a pliares to turn the Allen key to loosen the caps. Keep them in order if you're reusing them cause they are balanced.
