I am going to start the build up of the 289 block my grandfather had squirreled away.....at least I hope I am
The block has cast #s C6ME-A
It appears to be crack free (it will get checked before machining), and intact except for..
Main caps. I have looked all through his workshop and cannot find main caps anywhere. My question is this, will main caps off a 302 work? If so, should I just buy new caps and have block line honed or should used ones be ok?
Thank you guys, appreciate it
Main caps and the block are a unit. The fact that you can't find the original caps is going to require you having the block "lined bored". Contact the machine shop you plan on using and discuss getting a set of main caps from another block. I would guess that a 302 block main caps will work.
The caps are fitted to the block and then the main bearing bores are machined to match. You will then need to use special main bearings with thicker shells to compensate for the bigger main bearing bores.
It might be better to just use a newer 302 block. Take the money you save on machine costs and special bearings and buy a newer block. You may very well come out cheaper.
Just talked to the local machine shop, they said 302 caps are the same and he even had some there. said he had enough he should be able to get them close and not have to bore too much material out in the process. Price for the whole operation, bore, line bore, caps, new freeze plugs, cam bushings and bagging for $400.00

Hate to tell you this, but a C6ME-A block isn't a 289 at all. It's a 390 block, or if you're lucky, a 428 block.
"Hate to tell me....."
That would be great news, not bad news.
I am going to have to verify the casting number then.
This is why I love this place, new discoveries every day
Thanks
If your heart's set on a 289, any 302 block will do, they're essentially the same blocks. It just wouldn't pay to have to machine main caps and line bore them to replace missing caps, unless it was a 289 Hi-PO block. If it were one, I have a set of Hi-Po main caps I can part with off a D8VE block. It's at 60 over now, but will go .080, which I just may do one day, unless I sell the caps first. Got a friend that had another set squirrled away in his barn, we're supposed to clean it out soon and I hope to dig those back up again.
