I'm looking on Rockauto and their CLOYES Timing set (Part # C3012K) says:
"Part is designed for CA Market vehicles" Ford never offered any such thing specifically for CA!
The factory installed cam sprocket (aka gear) has 36 nylon teeth. Over time, the teeth begin to chip. This gear also required a separate spacer.
The Ford "service part replacement" cam sprocket has 36 aluminum teeth, the spacer is made as part of it. So when you replace the nylon gear with the aluminum gear, throw the spacer away.
There are two types of Ford "service part replacement" cam sprockets. 1965/72 is one type, 1973/76 is different. I don't what the difference is.
The steel FE crank sprocket is the same 1964/76.
The 5th digit of the VIN is the assembly plant code. K: Your truck was assembled in Kansas City MO, but it could have been sold new in CA
Stamped on the 3rd line-far right of the Warranty Plate is the DSO code. Decodes to the city/state the truck was ordered from.
If ordered from CA: DSO 71 Los Angeles (SoCal) & 72 San Jose (Nor Cal).
Upper pic shows the original nylon gear (6256) and its spacer (6265).
I think it was all calif. made vehicles were smog controled. I knew a guy that had a Chevy truck that had a AZ truck moved to calif. an while living in a cailf. the engine locked up after spinning a rod bearing..
He got a new crate 350 motor and he then had a hard time towing his 6 horse trailer, even after putting 5k on the motor. That truck was a hog after putting in the new motor. So figured that it was a due to being a cailf motor he said it felt like about 50 hp less.
I think it was all calif. made vehicles were smog controlled.
Nothing changed in 1973 except the 360/390 cam sprocket. 1969/71 302 use the same cam sprocket, it changed in 1972. 240/300 used the same cam sprocket 1965/78.
