Starter problems please help
I just put a new starter in my 2002 f250 super duty 7.3. I took it for a test drive and went into the store. When I came out the starter was trying to start itself. What is the problem?

Can you be a little more descriptive?
Was the engine actually cranking over without starting? Was it a steady cranking or intermittent? Or was it just the starter solenoid clicking or just the starter motor spinning without engaging the engine?

Thats an odd one. Sounds like the solenoid shorted to ground causing the starter to engage. I can't imagine what would cause it to short. Defective solenoid? The starter should be under warranty, I would swap it out and see if it replicates. Of course this is assuming you don't have a remote starter or didn't mess with anything else as you were swapping the starter.

OEM or after market?
After markets often need to have some of the frame supporting structure ground away for clearance of the solenoid.
If it were OEM, I would say it has a defective solenoid OR the (green wire?) command wire has been pinched.

It was a aftermarket starter from auto zone . the reason I replaced the old starter is it was turning the engine to slow, so I got some new batteries and starter.They were all shot.I put in the replacement starter of the replacement starter and new starter relay and it seems to have solved the problem, we shall see. Thanks for everyone's input and replies. ..have a safe and happy 4th.

Just my personal experience, but any thing that I have bought for my 7.3 from AutoZone has not lasted. AutoZone parts I've put any gas vehicle has been fine. But their parts just don't seem to hold up to diesels.
