Have a friend that says his #6 cylkinder is dead.
Its a nice 2009 truck , he wants to sell it to me.
Whats the average price of a good engine or what would be the best route to go?

There's much to consider here. How many km are on the truck? This makes a HUGE difference if you're thinking of resale value.

Is the truck loaded the way you want your truck to be?

Would you be doing the engine swap yourself or would you be paying someone to do it?

I was looking at a project truck like that not so long ago and kept an eye on Kijiji. At one time I found an engine, transmission, and transfer case all in one unit for $7,000 which I thought was quite reasonable. If I remember correctly it had under 200K km.

I also saw a 2008 that needed an engine and was listed for $6,500. I can tell you that's too high because it apparently wasn't selling. Then again, it may not have been in very good shape either.

Good to see a neighbor on here!

I just picked up a 08 F-450 with 80,000 miles for 3,000.00 . The engine needs to be replaced but the truck is in perfect condition inside and out. I am going to go thru the engine my self. The guy just replaced the turbos, radiator and intercooler. He also replaced all the rotors and brakes just before the engine died. Encase anyone is curious wha happen, an injector stuck open during a regen which caused the engine to hydrolock. I found metal in the upper fuel filter housing so i assume the fuel system is shot. No metal in the engine and it still actually runs.

I can reman the engine and replace the fuel system for my cost of about 9,000 which puts arp studs, new fuel system, de-liped pistons and few other good parts back in to correct internationals short comings and will actually last the life of the truck. So I'll have 12K in a truck that books for 17-19k so I think its a good deal. But i also look at what a new 450 cost as well just the cab and chassis are around 45K.

To come out on these you have to be able to work on it yourself and have the right tools. Thats why these trucks sell so cheap when the engines fail, there value is basically wiped out due to repair cost, most people are forced to walk away and take what ever they can get. The cost below are just parts, labor on each would very from 2000.00 to 3000.00 on top of those numbers plus fluids and shop supplies.

OEM engine prices only no labor or additional core charges
6.4 drop in engine complete 15,000
6.4 long block 9,500 no turbo no fuel system
6.4 short block 5,600 no heads, fuel system, or turbo

Engine prices only no labor or additional core charges
Junk yard engines with around 40-60 K 6,500-8,000 complete drop in
Junk yard engine 80-100K 5,800 to 7,000 complete drop in
Junk yard engine 100K + 4,500-6,500 complete drop in

Was that a cab and chassis truck or a pick up. Would you be willing to post a picture of the truck. Im just interested to see what a 3k truck looks like in your area, cause a truck with a good body up here is like finding a 100 lb gold brick.

If there is any interest, I have my '09 F450 Lariat w/Ultimate package sitting in Wichita Falls, TX, with no compression in #8. Ford dealer quoted $22 complete engine replacement. Truck has 207771 miles and no body damage, 2 worn spots on driver seat and on steering wheel. Bought new in June '09.
I was starting out on vacation trip when it blew, so had to replace truck quickly and found a '10 model almost identical, so bought it and continued trip.
I now have to take the aux tank, the Retrax cover, grille guard, cell booster and other minor add-ons, and then will sell it. Can't put $22k into it, and can't do the work myself. I had the H&S Mini on it from 98k without any problems and I did not rod it, just wanted out of the regens.
Don't know what to ask, but I see complete interiors going for $4k, so surely a complete interior with an undamaged body around it would bring more?
