Have a couple jugs on standby, and refill sometime between now and 0 miles to empty.

Hello question for you...
Why does it seem I see the cleaning exhaust filter message a lot lately ? 4698 4875 5073 miles ? Is it not finishing the cycle ? I have NOT done the recall but it seems like I have been seeing message more often than usual thanks for the reply in advance

Sounds like you are not completing the drive cycle of about 10mi. watch your coolant and trans temps (digital) they will go up a few degrees when cleaning the filter, drive until they go back to normal try to stay out of stop and go traffic while doing this.

Ok thanks but it's strange my commute is 30 or so miles
Do I have to be over a certain mph for a certain amount of time ? I was going a different way (more highway) at a average of 80mph and the CEF light would pop on every 500 miles or so

Maybe this will shed some light.

The engine has to reach normal operating temps before a regen will begin. On top of that, the DPF must also be full in order to trigger a regen. So with those two in mind......

On a 30 mile 1-way commute, a good chunk of that drive is just getting the engine warmed up. So even if the DPF is full, the truck is waiting to get fully warm before starting the regen. Let's say you're more than halfway to work, the DPF is full, and a regen starts. You drive maybe 10 miles or less, get to work, and now you shut off the engine. The regen cycle didn't complete, and now the DPF for giggles is at 65% full. You drive another 100 miles or so, and the DPF is back at 100% full. Now the regen cycle begins again, only partially completes, and this becomes a vicious circle of partial regens and regens happening often.

Does that make sense?

Now in the broad picture, doing this isn't really going to hurt it. It would be nice to get it out and let it run longer to complete regen cycles here and there, but these trucks can tolerate short commutes and city driving. If it gets to the point where it's not completing enough regen cycles, it will pop up on the dash and tell you to keep driving until it's happy again.
