DEF warning won't shut off??

Hey guys, just got 500 miles to empty message. On my next trip out I grabbed a 2.5 gallon at my local auto parts store. When I had 99.9 percent of the jug in, it actually started to spit back out. I got the rest in and figured I was done. It did seem strange that it only took 2.5 as I figured it was just about empty to get this message and 2.5 would only take me half way. Anyways, a few trips later and the message is still there. Do I have a bad level sensor or was it spitting out prematurely? Shouldn't 2.5 gallons have killed the warning even if it didn't fill it? Trying to figure this out before I make an appointment at the dealer....

I did not get a 500 miles to go

I got a 50 miles to go before reduced to 50 mph max - and it took almost a full 2.5 gallon jug of DEF

i filled up with 38 miles left and when it chimed again at 36 miles to go it reset.

Hope this helps

So for both of us, 2.5 gallons to fill a 5 gallon tank. I'm not great at math, but....

I'd take it in...something isn't right. Several times I've bought a 2.5 gallon jug after noticing the DEF was below half full in the DIC. SEVERAL times I have gotten DEF all over the side of the truck as it only will take about 2.25 gallons if I fill it right after noticing. You'd think I'd learn. Bottom line, if it was splashing out the top, the sensor should have reset the level. If yours didn't something is wrong. I'd get it checked out.

Nope, no reset in the dash. It's like your gas gauge. It resets as it's filled.

It is possible to get a vapor lock when you fill too quickly. Allowing the fluid to flow as fast as it can usually does not work for me. A slow pour generally allows me to fill without backsplash and I can usually get another gallon in there if I wait and do it slowly. It's possible that it needs two more gallons.

Interesting. Will have to buy some more and give it a try. Incidentally, the warning finally went out late last night.... almost 100 miles after the fill. I am very curious how much more it will take on a slow fill.

Mine was down to 200 miles or so and I put in 2.5 gals and it still had a warning message, it was not enough to get back above the sensor.

Added another gallon and the mesage went off.

I think yours was vapor locked our pouring it in too fast. I use the motorcraft jug and nozzle with the air tube, no issues.

You are spot on on that.they do air lock fairly easy. Ive done it.took nozzle out shook the truck and put in another jug.

The def tank isnt vented so its fairly easy to do.

Not sure. I did stop and drive around a bit after it spit back. When I went to add the last pint or so out of the bottle at a VERY slow rate it spit again so it sure seemed full but who knows. I was using the Peak 2.5 bottle that also has the air tube but maybe it's not as good as the Ford one. I will pick up another gallon today and see if it goes in...

I also have to pour slowly with some pauses here and there.
I use that Peak DEF 2.5 gal jug with the air tube.

With it spitting out after a slow pour, it sure sounds like yours is full.
With it that full, I would think you could see it.
If you can't slowly get more in there today, I guess you'll be visiting your dealer.

Now that it's winter (depending on your location) you don't want it to freeze in the filler neck.
I put all 5 gal in mine a few weeks back because I wasn't worried about the temp here in AL yet.

For everyone that's getting their DEF splashed or having filling issues, go buy the filling tube from your Ford dealer. This makes filling a breeze with no mess and it can be reused.
