As Tim said, when it gets down low enough, you will have a message come up that lets you know you have 500 miles to refill. From that point, it starts counting down. To see if your DEF level is "ok" or "under half", you have to go through the screens and look. There is no actual message for that.

I checked mine at 4K with a lot of towing 20K and it said below half so when I fueled they had DEF at the pump, took 2 gal @ 2.50/gal lot cheaper than those boxes and checked the info center said DEF full, this is a 2015 F350. No problems with resetting.
My truck just cracked 5000 miles
I also just saw the 500 to empty def message
I changed the oil and added 1 2 1/2 gallon jug of fluid
will the truck swallow another jug or is it close to full ?
Thanks
on a side note I :
1. rotated tires adjusted pressure torqued wheels to 165 ft/lbs
2.greased front u joints
3. checked air filter minder
4. topped off washer bottle
5.drained water seperator (done once a month too)
Did I miss anything ?
Obviously, it is your prerogative to use the Ford fluid, but you can also pick it up from Walmart or an auto parts store for much less money. I use Peak Blue from Walmart. As long as it meets the Iso standard, it doesn't matter what brand you use. Do be sure to check the date on the box though, so you don't buy old DEF regardless of where you choose to buy it. I also have the Ford spout, and it works fine on the Peak jugs.
the dealer was closed
I went to Napa and bought 3 gallons of blue DEF
on sale $3.00/gal
It swallowed just shy of 2 gallons
so I guess 5000 mi = 4 1/2 gallons
Thanks guys
I read while in line 60 something % water
dam shoulda bought a 6 pack and peed in there instead
It would be nice if we could just use ammonia like we do on our SCR's at work, but that would likely lead to too many claims of injury due to mishandling ammonia, or at the very least, complaints of the strong smell. Glad you got it sorted out!
A few months ago I got the "500 miles to empty" message. I didn't think that could be right because I had filled the tank full a month or so before. I filled it up and the message disappeared. I got the message again this morning, filled it up with less than 2 gallons. I'm thinking the middle sensor may be bad. Next time I get the message I'll take it to the shop.
I'm still very satisfied with this truck. So far I've enjoyed it more than any other pickup I've owned.
