One year reader, new member, new 6.7 about 4 months, 6400 miles. Here is my situation: at about 3500 miles noticed that def was below half full and added 2 and one half gallons. I thought good about 7000 for tank about what I gleened from articles. At 6100 warning comes on 623 miles to empty when started in my driveway slight tilt checked again after it was parked level came up 1271 miles to empty. I thought good bout right but kept coming up with same miles or might go back to 623 if not level last warning 1271 this was over the course of 3 weeks and 400 miles huh? Then no warning for the last 2 weeks 200 miles and I do a system check and def level reads ok not less than half full. What gives anyone know?
The DEF sensors are pretty limited in the information they can send to the PCM. There are only three positions and with freezing/sloshing issues, I'm not surprised the sensors struggle. If you're getting the less than half full message, it is safe to just fill it up. Either put in two gallons or use the factory filler neck to fill it completely.

Great explanation...maybe you should submit that to Ford
My current quandry? I ran mine down to 183 miles to empty (like I always do). Purchased 5 gallons of DEF fluid, tank only took what I estimate to be 3 gallons and it was full. Previous 3 or 4 times I have done this, I always get just a whiff under 5 gallons into the tank. Go figure.......
$2.79 a gallon at the dispensers at Pilot or loves truck stops. $12 to $15 for 2.5 gallon jugs at major auto parts outlets like NAPA, O'reillys and Auto Zone.
DEF is here for the foreseeable future. It is a mature technology, used in Europe for several years. Aside from some sensor issues in extremely cold environments, Northern Canada mostly, there have been very few complaints about the 2011 Ford 6.7 powered trucks. The interesting thing is though there are a bunch of these trucks running around in Alaska, the extreme cold DEF issues do not seem to be showing up there.

thanks for the info, & on a side note, I have the same year & make 5th wheel. looking fwd to the 1st roadtrip when my truck arrives.
is def here to stay or wiil they come out with something in 2012 or is this for deisel forever tks
be thankful your truck has the setup as it allows these trucks to run alot more freely than the chocked down 6.4's
I think DEF is a non issue as truckstops start having it for sale at pumps and if you really can get it for less than $3 a gallon, filling that up for $18 bucks every 7k miles is a non issue.
the important thing I hope is not lost is how much better these trucks run by having the DEF system. the mileage is back on these trucks.
Yea, the DEF maintenance is hardly worth complaining about.
I don't care for the DPF much but no issue with the DEF.
Too much bad publicity before these trucks came out which is funny because people were complaing about something they had not had experience with at the time.

I thoroughly enjoy seeing old threads about the upcoming trucks with the "pee in the tank" option. There was so much vicious nonsense being spewed by total idiots. The actual outcome has even shut up the Dodge boys.
I last paid 2.79 a gallon at the dispensers at the local Pilot truck stop also. Doesnt take much at all to top it off at the half full mark on the guage.
I feel sorry for the fella's thats getting gouged by the dealer on DEF,I try and tell everyone I see and talk to that has a 6.7L about the truck stop DEF at the pump.
I posted this last week in the "Read First" section, here's the link. It's a 2mb summary of aftertreatment, DEF, system operation etc. and yes, it's here to stay for the foreseeable future.
