anybody here have or have had a pet rat? or am i the only weird one? this guy staying at my house has a pet rat, but he took off to Ohio, and left his rat, so i started taking care of it and stuff, and im really attached to her, if he ever comes back to get her, im gonna have to get a rat of my own, theyre really cool.
I did..... I killed her tho. I new she was out of water but was late for work so I;m like I'll get it when I get home. I check when I get home and she is starting to dehydrate so I get her some water pretty quick and she drinks some. I filled her bottle and her food dish. She liked to remove the food and bury anyway. But she wouldn;t drink so she died about 2 weeks later.
Used to have pet rats all the time, the biggest I had was over a foot long including his tail, and he was trained to sit on my shoulder and watch tv (no never messed on me) he lived to be about 9 years old I think (I was his second owner). I had noticed it is high probability that rats get tumors particularly ones from pet stores (imagine, that every food/drug the FDA claims causes cancer and tumors has been tested on rats who are genetically predisposed to cancer and tumors, go figure) However in my time of owning rats I did learn not to use Cedar shavings in their cage, as there is a chemical/fume reaction with their urine that is toxic to them but not us. I always kept a block of 2x4 or something for them chew on to keep their teeth from getting too long, which then requires vet trimming (unless you Know what your doing) or they starve because their too long teeth inhibit their eating. They are great pets though ......Enjoy!
Never had a rat, but I had several other small rodents as pets. I guess it all in what you like, I really enjoyed them as pets. Some people have the idea that there nasty and will bite. From what I hear rats are pretty smart and the least likley to bite (hamsters are very bad for biting!). Get a book or go online and you will learn more than you want to know!
me and the wife had a few rats once
keep the males from the females, or you'll have even more rats
and they tend to get cancer or tumors, kinda like ferrets, almost al of the ones we had, we ended up giving to a friend, and they (the rats) are all dead i think...
sometimes they live real long but not too often
Never had a pet rat. We've got a pet gray squirrel that we raised from a baby and is now 2 years old. Rocky spends most of his time in a large cage, but get's at least a half hour of free time in the evenings to jump and run about the house under supervision. If he gets mad enough to bite, he gives plenty of warning beforehand. He's nipped me once and got his nose popped for his trouble so he hasn't tried it again. And he's never tried to nip Mrs ***** (he knows better). The dogs hide from Rocky as he's been known to try and ride them.
I do believe I'll stick with the squirrel over a rat.
