I am getting a sewer odor in my home, seems to be associated with my upstairs bathroom. Seems to come and go. Seems (and Im not sure about this) to be worse after heavy water use, evening showers etc..Was out of the house last weekend and little or no smell when we returned.
Im planning to change the toilet ring, anything else it could be? Blocked vent? Seems like it would be constant if that were it.
Other info- Downstairs bath is being renovated (by me slowly) and little water is going down those drains right now but there is a separate vent stack for that bathroom and no smell in that part of the house. The smell did start after I demo-ed the shower and stopped using it though.
P-traps being empty will let the smell into the house. Depending on where the trap is for you shower it could be dry thus letting air through it. Also sounds like a vent may be partially clogged. When you are using alot of water the dry or almost dry p trap mixed with a slightly clogged or undersized vent may be forcing air out where it is not supposed to go. Best bet, cap the shower drain line first and see what happens.
10 to 1 the traps are empty and letting the odor back into the house. Run some water into the traps and that will block the release of the odor. That should do it!
I just finished remodeling my baths. I took the p traps off to repair the sheetrock around them & to install my cabinets. I just taped them up good & it stopped my odor problems. Run a water hose down your vent pipes & flush them out good if you think they might be clogged. I think you would be having slow draining of your pipes if the vents were blocked.
You could try and put some bleach down the pipes, I had this odor too, it does put a temporary fix to it. But it helps. Does keep everything clean inside as well.
assuming you've got a separate vent stack for upstairs i'd start there. if it's plugged, animal, leaves, pine needles, anything..heavy water use could siphon one of the upstairs traps dry.
The overflow in bathroom sinks can get pretty stinky. Fill the basin and then drain, does the smell get worse?
Mix bleach and water, about 4-1 and pour into the overflow to kill the bacteria. DO NOT use bleach if any type of drain cleaner has been used recently.
