Ignition/Headlight Chime

Howdy!

I am here trying to help my old man out with a problem. He has a 2013 E150 Van. Recently it developed this issue that is going to run him bald.

You guys know that chime the van makes when you open the door and leave your keys in the ignition or leave the headlights on? Well, that chime happens every time he opens the door, even with the headlights off and no key in the ignition. I'm not too familiar with these vans, so I'm not 100% sure as to where to start.

Could you guys point me in the right direction as to where I can start troubleshooting this? Not sure if this is a common problem or not.

Thanks guys!

There is a contact on the ignition drum, when you insert the key it grounds it and it chimes when you open the door. This contact is a little "v" shaped copper strap. If the ignition drum has been pulled out, this contact may have been misplaced.
It happened to me on my 2000 e150. I'll be expect to be the same on your 2013

This condition could be the chime module going bad----the key-in-ignition sound doesn't typically affect the headlight warning although they can and will sound together if lights are on and key in when drivers door is open.

Once upon a time I too just unplugged that module but after leaving the lights on a few times thought to re-think that. I re-configured the chassis wiring connector for the key-in-ignition function and am totally happy with my warning signals now.

Downloading a schematic for that year chassis would help locate the proper wire to disable. If there's not an EVTM handy AutoZone has schematics you can access.

I'm guessing if I pull the ignition switch it will be there? or does the bottom cover of the column have to come off?

You can release the complete ignition lock cylinder---that requires your careful aim and hitting a 3/32" ball bearing some 4-5" upward through a 1'8" hole in the bottom of the lower column shroud.

The wire I'm talking about contained in a physical connector attaching to the chime module housing. There's no need digging into the column and lock cylinder if you're looking only to snip the wire controlling the annoying chirping, chime etc etc.

I don't want to snip it I'd rather see what is causing the problem and fixing it. So it is under the column?

The particular wiring controlling that signal indeed runs through the column, its contact located inside the ignition cylinder key lock recess.

Here's a photo of the lower shroud removed, follow the arrow:

Always a good thing when you can keep an errant beeper quiet AND help the old man retain his hair.
