F250 rear leaf spring

Hi all,

I have a 1999 F250 w/diesel engine and 95K miles Recently noticed the driver side rear leaf spring has one of the leafs cracked near the axle. I have a total of 5 leafs in the spring set. The one that is cracked is the middle one.
The truck still appears to set level and I don't haul heavy loads.
Questions:

How critical is this to drive without being replaced?
How hard is it to replace (whole spring set or just the broken one)

Thanks for any help in advance. --Jerry

F250 rear leaf spring

You need to have that replaced. Replacing springs isn't hard, just a physical job. Eat your Wheaties

I just replaced my rear leaf springs last month. This was the first time I had ever done leaf springs on any vehicle and it is not a bad job at all. Just need jack stands, a couple of jacks and an impact wrench is nice, but not required.

Below is my post with pictures and a bit of a description on how I installed my leaf springs.

You have to change both springs. You cant have one new spring and one old spring. Truck would sit funny. Springs sag over time. Also the new spring would put stresses on the old one and it to would crack and brake

You should definitely get it either replaced or fixed. You don't want that piece falling of the vehicle while you're driving.

Depending on your budget, you have a few options. Either change on side, both or have a new leaf take the place of the broken one. Are you doing the work yourself or having someone install it?

We have plenty of customers who ask for just a replacement leaf to fix their broken one but they find it to be a little expensive labor wise because the shop has to take the leaf apart and then fix it. (It really isn't a tough job and shouldn't be crazy expensiv, but some shops try and take advantage of people).

Feel free to send me a message if you want some pricing!

ATS is a great source for springs and parts. I went with SD Truck Springs simply because I am still a new user of FTE and did not realize ATS was a sponsor before ordering my springs. If/When I need suspension parts again in the future though, you can bet I will be looking at ATS first.
